Crappie, also called paper–mouths and strawberry bass, are a popular freshwater fish species found in rivers, lakes, and streams throughout the United States.

Not only are they beautiful and fun to catch, they are also a light mild fish. When it comes to bait for crappie fishing, a variety of options will do the trick.

Some of the most popular crappie baits include worms, grubs, minnows, and jigs. Depending on the season and weather conditions, it can be helpful to change out your bait.

In terms of location, crappie like to feed near or within cover such as submerged logs, vegetation, brush piles or submerged rocks. And when it comes to finding deeper water, keep in mind that crappie can regularly be found in anywhere from 4 – 20 feet of water; they like cold water. Once you have your bait and location sorted out, you are ready to start trolling with the boat or shore fishing.

Keep your rod out of direct sunlight while fishing so you can easily detect any strikes. To keep your catch fresh, remove the crappie from the water and store them in a livewell or cooler full of ice.
